Tantan / tantan-men are a play on the Chinese dandan noodles that the Japanese have adopted, the preparation of which is supposedly simpler than ramen. And a lot of ramen places in Japan serve these as well.
Being one of the rare vegan ramen places, we had to give this place a shot. And it was mentioned by a friend who visited here as well. So another reason to do so. I wasn’t bowled over by the food and think Ippudo – bonvivant and Totto Ramen in NY do an equally good job, if not better. The place certainly works for a busy day and a quick meal. And they serve beers and wines too, should you want to do a leisurely meal 🙂
We went for a spicy sesame ramen bowl and another plain ramen bowl. The sesame one was nutty in flavor, and much more appealing if you’re looking for something more flavorful. While the other one didn’t have the spice kick, I think it more than made up for it in the flavor department. Yes, a broth of vegetables, seasoned can taste good.
We got sides of fried soy meat and dumplings. Too bad they didn’t have steamed dumplings on the offer. I, for one, always think the fried / pan fried dumplings taste a tad bitter. No, I don’t care for it being fried, I care for the taste.
And we’d also ordered an orange juice and wine. Talking about stereotyping (?), our server, who was nice placed the orange juice before me and wine before the husband. Little did she know! :p
The child had fallen asleep (remember that it’s only our second full day here and the jet lag’s still there) so we got to enjoy a quiet meal. A little too quiet, because the husband couldn’t locate the restaurant, nor could he take me questioning him on that. Sigh! Men!
Eventually, I was the one who was able to lead us to the restaurant and have the last smirk :p
Remembering better to carry own boxes to take food for later, we ordered a side of rice and the soy for the child. Feeding him in the comforts of the hotel room was so much easier. Even though it was for breakfast next morning – around 6 AM 🙂
