Zenon Taverna

Funny or not?

Last night, the hubster went for drinks. And he volunteered to be the driver. I’d told him that we’d go out for lunch next day. So come today, he’s shaking his head that he has to drive and complaining to me that I should get a charter instead!

Zenon Taverna has been on my list for a while now and I have been to Astoria specifically for a meal only once before. In over 8 years now!

So we decided to come here today. It was supposed to be a cloudy day, so I thought it wasn’t a bad idea to spend time in commute and not outside (in case it rained).
It took us a about an hour to get here.

We ordered hummus, tahini, grilled mushrooms, grilled eggplants and zucchini and vegetable keftedes, along with a big plate of what they called was stuffed eggplant. To me, it was more like eggplant sliced in two, and then topped with diced vegetables.

The stuffed eggplant wasn’t bad, simple flavors but everything except the hummus and tahini just pretty much had oregano as the main flavoring ingredient. Lots and lots of it.
The lemony garlicky whipped potatoes that came with the grilled zucchini and eggplants was a little too tarty.

We wrapped it up with a semolina cake, soaked in sugar syrup. It was nice and crumby but basically lacked any flavor and was just reduced to being that – a sweet.
A total of about 4 and a half hours. Didn’t seem like worth it at the end. Not all the way from Jersey City. But the staff was warm. And the place, cozy and a nice feel to it.
